A new, lavishly illustrated volume is being published to mark the tenth anniversary of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA and the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY.

«The Marvel of Lucerne» is the title of a new book (in German only), just in time to mark with the birthdays of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA and the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY. This comprehensive and lavishly illustrated volume illuminates the success story from a great variety of perspectives and allows those who have been directly involved to have their say: above all Claudio Abbado and Pierre Boulez, who have given a detailed joint interview for the first time ever. The authors include such well known German-language cultural journalists as Peter Hagmann (Neue Zürcher Zeitung), Wolfgang Schreiber (Süddeutsche Zeitung), and Julia Spinola (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung). And many of Abbado’s and Boulez’s companions – such as Daniel Barenboim, Alfred Brendel, and Maurizio Pollini – have contributed special birthday wishes of their own.

The much-anticipated book about the Festival: Erich Singer has written the first comprehensive history of what is today Europe’s most significant concert festival – from its founding in the summer of 1938 up to the present. Using substantial source material for his research, Singer sheds light on the highlights, crises, and key turning points of the Festival, right up to its current status. He addresses cultural-political contexts, considers the shifts in focus between regionalism and internationalism, and presents the perspectives of contemporary observers of the Festival and its performers. This richly illustrated book contains previously unpublished source material, including documents and photographs both of those who have shaped the Festival and of its influential artists. Erich Singer, who was born in 1943 in eastern Switzerland, was initially a conductor and orchestral musician in Basel and a music teacher in Lucerne. From 1980 to 1990 he served as director of concert artists’ agencies and held a position in the LUCERNE FESTIVAL’s artistic and editorial department. From 1992 to 1995 he was head of its artistic office, later serving as head of music editorial (until 2006). Since then he has been a freelance editor. Singer has published many writings on music.

Erich Singer's wide-ranging history of the Festival is finally available in English. Originally published in German in 2014 and richly illustrated, this is the first book to document Europe's most significant orchestral festival comprehensively, from its founding in the summer of 1938 to the present day. The German edition has become the standard work. For this shortened international edition, the author has revised and updated the material.
